Ask an Expert:
What Did
Abraham
Lincoln’s Voice
Sound Like?
Civil War scholar Harold
Holzer helps to decode what
spectators heard when the 16th
president spoke
No recordings of Abraham Lincoln's voice

Thomas Edison invented the phonograph,
the first device to record and play back
sound. Shown here is Lincoln delivering
his famous Gettysburg Address in 1863.

I suspect that when people imagine
Abraham Lincoln and the way he sounded,
many imagine him as a bass, or at least a
deep baritone. Perhaps this is because of
his large stature and the resounding
nature of his words. Certainly, the
tradition of oratory in the 1850s would
support the assumption. “Usually people
with centurion, basso profundo voices
dominated American politics,” says Harold
Holzer, a leading Lincoln scholar. Then, of
course, there are the casting choices of
film and TV directors over the years. “It
can’t get any deeper than Gregory Peck,”
says Holzer. Peck played Lincoln in the
1980s TV miniseries The Blue and the Gray .
But, unfortunately, no recordings of
Lincoln’s voice exist, since he died 12
years before Thomas Edison invented the
phonograph, the first device to record and
play back sound. If anyone had an
educated guess as to how it sounded
though, it would be Holzer, who has
written 40 books on Lincoln and the Civil
War. The author has pored over reports of
Lincoln’s public appearances on speaking
tours, eyewitness accounts told to
Lincoln’s law partner William Herndon
and newspaper commentaries about the
Lincoln-Douglas debates, and, surprisingly,
he says, one of the only things that can be
said with certainty is that Lincoln was a
tenor.
“Lincoln’s voice, as far as period
descriptions go, was a little shriller, a
little higher,” says Holzer. It would be a
mistake to say that his voice was squeaky
though. “People said that his voice carried
into crowds beautifully. Just because the
tone was high doesn’t mean it wasn’t far-
reaching,” he says.

The Nigerian Air Force has announced
that its patrol and surveillanc activities
have succeeded in blocking routes
through which petroleum products and
other materials are supplied to the
extremist Boko Haram sect.
In a statement Wednesday, the Director
Public Relations and Information of the
Nigerian Air Force, Dele Alonge, said
patrols along the Nigeria-Cameroon
borders “have greatly strained the
supply efforts of the BHT (Boko Haram
terrorists)”.
Mr. Alonge, an air commodore, said,
“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) through
its intensified and persistent efforts in
the ongoing fight against Boko Haram
Terrorists (BHT) has intercepted over
4,000 drums and jerry cans of
petroleum products and other smuggled
items.
“The items, suspected to be supplies
meant for BHT, were confiscated from
the smugglers in Pepe, Dashin-Hausa,
Belel Bilachi, and Konkul villages
located along the Nigeria-Cameroon
Borders on Tuesday, 28 July 2015.
“The NAF was able to achieve the recent
feat through its air patrol activities,
covering both land and water, along the
Nigeria-Cameroon boarders.
The NAF has continued to identify and
destroy BHT camps and resupplies by
employing surveillance and combat
aircraft. Intelligence gathered revealed
that these efforts have greatly strained
the supply efforts of the BHT.”

SANTA CLARA, CA -- (Marketwired) --
07/30/15 -- Jasper, a global Internet of
Things (IoT) platform leader, today announced
a strategic partnership with Microsoft to
provide enterprises worldwide with an IoT
service management solution that enables
them to bring new IoT services to market
faster, facilitate their shift from product
businesses to services businesses, and rapidly
scale. Through joint engineering efforts, the
companies are combining the power of the
Jasper IoT services platform and the
Microsoft Azure IoT Suite, available in preview
later this year.
"More than 2,000 enterprises across dozens of
industries worldwide have selected the Jasper
Platform to enable them to deliver IoT
services that increase customer value and
grow revenues," said Macario Namie, VP of
Strategy at Jasper. "Through this strategic
partnership with Microsoft, we continue to
increase the business value of IoT by making
it easier and faster for enterprises to bring
their IoT services to market, and to scale those
services globally."
The Azure IoT Suite extends existing Azure
capabilities to connect devices and other
assets (i.e. "things"), capture the diverse and
voluminous data they generate, and integrate
and orchestrate the flow of that data. The
suite also manages, analyzes and presents
device data as usable information to help
businesses make better decisions, while also
intelligently automating operations. The
offering, while customizable to fit the unique
needs of any organization, also provides
complete applications which speed
deployment of common scenarios seen across
many industries, such as remote monitoring,
asset management and predictive
maintenance, while providing the ability to
grow and scale solutions to millions of
"things."
Jasper Control Center, Jasper's IoT services
platform, is a cloud-based IoT platform that
enables companies of all sizes to rapidly and
cost-effectively deploy, manage and monetize
IoT services for any connected device. The
platform, which is easily configurable to meet
the unique requirements of business across
industries, gives companies the real-time
visibility, intelligence and control they need to
accelerate time-to-market, automate
operations, optimize performance,
troubleshoot and fix issues, and manage
costs. As those companies grow, Control
Center makes it easy for them to seamlessly
scale their businesses across the globe.
Jasper partners with 25 mobile operator
groups, representing more than 100 mobile
operator networks worldwide, to deliver the
benefits of Control Center in over 100
countries.
"Our vision for the Azure IoT Suite is to help
companies thrive in this era of IoT by
delivering preconfigured solutions and world
class services that any company, whether
startup or the most established global
enterprises, can use to create new value," said
Sam George, Director of Azure IoT. "Jasper's
IoT services platform is a critical component
of delivering on this vision. By bringing
together the Jasper Platform and the Azure
IoT Suite, businesses of any size and in any
industry can build cost effective IoT solutions
for themselves or their customers."
The combination of the Jasper Platform and
the Azure IoT Suite will provide enterprises
worldwide with the following advantages:
Faster Time-to-Market - Enterprises in any
industry can accelerate time to market of their
IoT services by taking advantage of pre-
established, deep integration across all
technology layers -- connectivity, application,
and data.
Global Visibility - Businesses gain a global
view of their IoT deployments -- including both
device data and Control Center IoT service
data -- through the Azure IoT Suite experience.
Automated Business Decisions - The solution
delivers richer insights that inform more
sophisticated decision-making.

Shocking! South African Pastor Forces His Members To Swallow Snakes
Hmmh! Seems like there are many strange ‘pastors’ in South Africa! Reports have been heard of many SA pastors who have made their gullible members eat grass, drink petrol, eat hair and some of them even trample on their members. This pastor of ‘Endtimes Disciples Ministries’ allegedly brought live snakes and declared that the snakes have become chocolate and urged the congregation to eat it. Here’s what was posted on their Facebook page…
Man of God declared a snake to become a chocolate (chomp) and the congregation ate it. We have authority to change everything into anything and it will obey because of our authority. He also made some eat stones….
Man of God said they must bring a rock and He turned it into bread. Satan have been making people fools. Satan said to Jesus ‘turn a rock into a bread’ he knew that he could do it however his motive was wrong.See more photos below:
